Your Arctic Wardrobe: The Science of Staying Warm in Temple-Killeen
Killeen-Temple is looking at single digit temperatures this weekend, so staying warm is crucial. Are you prepared?
Nothing Bites More Than Frostbite
It is going to be extremely cold in our neck of the woods this weekend. Many people in Killeen-Temple are planning to stay inside, but some of us have livestock and other things to tend to outside. If you are not properly dressed, you could be at risk of frostbite, which is the result of skin and tissues being frozen. It is most common in the fingers and toes.
The Proper Clothing for Frigid Temps
Contrary to popular belief, a big, bulky sweater is not the best bet when it comes to staying warm. The bigger the sweater or sweatshirt, the better the chance that cold air can work its way underneath. This is why it is so important that you layer your clothing. According to Sitkagear.com, if you are working outside, make sure you have a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating layer, and a waterproof outer layer. Hunters will have no problem with this method, but if you do not have hunting gear, try an insulated top, under a short sleeve shirt, under a flannel shirt, under a sweatshirt. A pair of long johns under pants or sweats is also a good idea.
Don’t Forget the Rest
You can lose a ton of heat through your head, so wear an insulated hat. To prevent frostbite on your fingers and toes, wear insulated, waterproof gloves. Waterproof is key if you are dealing with snow or icy conditions. Wear insulated socks over cotton socks inside insulated waterproof boots. You may also want to cover your face and keep hand warmers in your pockets. Also, try not to wear anything that is too tight that hinders blood flow.
