There's nothing like seeing a city skyline as you approach, but a new initiative is asking for the City of Dallas to dim their lights for a good cause.

According to a report from WFAA, several businesses that make up the Dallas skyline will be dimming their lights to help aid migrating birds in an initiative called Lights Out.

Each year, approximately one billion U.S. bird deaths occur from collisions with buildings and structures, with migratory species at most risk. The birds become disoriented by the bright lights, which sometimes causes them to fatally crash into the buildings.

According to the Audubon Society, it's not just crashes that kill these birds. Many are disoriented and die of because they spend too much energy flying around and calling out in confusion, and their exhaustion makes them vulnerable to other urban threats.

Reunion Tower, One Arts Plaza, KPMG Plaza, the Hunt Building, and 1900 Pearl are all part of the Dallas skyline and have agreed to dim their lights. From now until October 10th these businesses will dim their lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

“We’re going to take our light output from 75 percent to 25 percent,” Reunion Tower President Dusti Groskreutz told WFAA. “It’s a first for all of us, I’m eager to see what it looks like. Texans love nature and this is the right thing for the ball to do."

At least they'll save on electricity this month.
