As the newest resident of Temple, Texas, my coworkers have helped me learn the area of where I now live - where to settle in, where to go to have fun, and most importantly, where to eat.

One place that came up in conversation was a placed named "Old Jody's." I thought, "Perfect! I'm new here, so I can definitely try this place out." Then I thought, wait, why is it called "Old Jody's"? Is there a "New Jody's"? One of my coworkers somehow read my mind and then showed me this article.

Well, there went that idea. However, that spurred me to go talk to Aaron Savage, the writer of the piece, who is now our editor for digital content. Savage told me that:

"For decades, people in Temple making lunch or dinner plans would ask, “Old Jody’s or New Jody’s?”, and it depended on the atmosphere you wanted. Both were always good options, and you always got great food and service. When New Jody’s closed in February of 2021, it left a hole in Temple’s heart. Thank goodness we still have Old Jody’s going strong, but it’s still kind of weird not seeing them both open at the corner of M and 1st."

We then decided to go out to New Jody's to see if the building had undergone any changes since closing.

Overall the building still looks pretty good for being closed for a year. The sign for the restaurant is still up as well:

Thanks to Aaron's keen eye, we also noticed the newspaper stand in the front of the empty building is still receiving updated issues.

This led Savage and I to see if we could ascertain some type of information regarding if the building was going to have a new business or remain dormant for an extended time. The best way to do that? Go next door to Old Jody's!

Also, this is a appreciation note for the neon sign at Old Jody's:

We reached out to the Temple Chamber of Commerce, and a spokesperson said they were unable to confirm what will be moving into the New Jody's building. However, an employee we spoke to at Old Jody's said she'd heard a taqueria was looking at moving in.

So as of writing, we don't know when or if a taqueria will open up, but it's certainly something to keep an eye on. What do you think will take over the New Jody's? Let us know by tapping the Chat button in our free station app. We'd love to hear from you, especially if you happen to know what's going to be cookin' in the ol' New Jody's.

This Temple, Texas DoorDasher Helped an Elderly Woman Get Fresh Start

Shelby Moeller never imagined that an odd request while delivering for Door Dash would lead to a life-changing experience for him as well as an elderly woman who needed more than food.

He described his initial encounter on Facebook, thanking people who offered to help the 78-year-old woman he named 'Jane Doe' to protect her privacy. On March 20th, he was able to share some amazing news on Facebook.

"Many of you probably remember my post last week about door dashing and coming across an elderly woman in deplorable conditions. When I made the post, I was thinking that I just needed to raise awareness that our elderly right here in our community are often alone, forgotten, and in need of help. I never imagined that through my post, God was going to provide a small but mighty army of volunteers that would jump in and save Jane Doe."

Jane Doe had to be moved out of her apartment while biohazard disinfecting was done by Spotless Crime Clean. All furniture, carpet, and most of her possessions had to be thrown away. There was also no edible food, as everything in the kitchen was either expired or infested with insects.

Shelby was able to spend some time with the woman, who he described as his 'new adopted grandma'. He learned about her background, and how she had struggled throughout her entire life, being reduced to having nothing multiple times. She had developed some hoarding behaviors, and he believed that some of that was due to her fear of losing everything again.

Take a look at the before and after photos of the amazing transformation of her home that changed a Central Texas woman's life and helped her start over in a healthy environment.
