Prince Harry and Megan Markle Donate to Texas Women’s Shelter
A women's shelter in Dallas was left with roof damage and busted pipes after the passing winter storm.
According to a report from the Dallas News, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex learned of the Genesis Women’s Shelter's need for support following the devastation of Winter Storm Uri and decided to take action.
When the storm swept through Texas, the Genesis Women's shelter was forced to close its doors for the first time in over 35 years. The pipes had burst, power was lost, and parts of the roof had caved in.
Unfortunately, due to the storm, 29 women and 58 children were displaced.
Prince Harry and Megan Markle run a non-profit organization called, Archewell Foundation, and donated an unknown amount to the Genesis Women's Shelter. The donation from the Archewell Foundation to the Genesis Women's Shelter will be able to replace the roof at their transitional housing facility and also help with other immediate needs.
The Genesis Women's Shelter's site explains their mission, which is:
"To provide safety, shelter and support for women who have experienced domestic violence, and to raise awareness regarding its cause, prevalence and impact."
The emergency shelter at Genesis is now open, and thankfully those who need a place to rest their head will find one. The transitional shelter remains closed, and is estimated to take months to fix.
Despite the challenges Texans faced last week, we are pushing forward as a community with help from our neighbors and others across the nation.
