Starbucks Donates $150k to Fight Hunger in Central Texas
One of the leading forces in alleviating hunger in Central Texas received a generous grant from the leading force in caffeinating the world this week.
Starbucks presented a $150,000 grant to the Central Texas Food Bank Tuesday. The funds will be used to expand the food bank's Mobile Food Pantry Program, which provided over 3.1 million pounds of food to an average 16,216 people each month across 21 counties in Central Texas. (That's an area roughly twice the size of Massachusetts.)
Specifically, the money will be used to add seven additional service locations in Central Texas and a new 30-foot refrigerated truck to the program's fleet of mobile pantries.
“One in seven people in Central Texas struggle with hunger, including one in five children,” said Derrick Chubbs, President and CEO of the Central Texas Food Bank. "We are proud to partner with Starbucks and Feeding America® to ensure that people who struggle with hunger have access to wholesome meals. This grant exemplifies what we can accomplish when we work together.”
“Starbucks is committed to doing our part to alleviate hunger in the U.S.,” says Jane Maly, social impact manager at Starbucks. “Our grant to the Central Texas Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry Program is an expansion on our existing partnership to donate our surplus food, helping them to provide access to give kids the nourishment they need to learn and succeed.”
The coffee giant committed $1.5 million to 17 food banks across the United States this past summer, and plans to give more to help alleviate hunger.
The Central Texas Food Bank was founded in 1981 and serves around 46,000 people in 21 Central Texas Counties each week. Their mission is to provide basic food staples, veggies, and fruits to under-serviced areas and families in need.
