A Temple man arrested last summer and charged with sexually assaulting an infant  girl now faces a capital murder charge.

Jeffrey Curtis Johnson was arrested on July 31, 2015 and charged with sexually assaulting 11-month-old Hannah Anuhea-Rose Davis, who died as a result of her injuries.

The girl's mother left the child in Johnson's care on the morning of July 29, 2015. Johnson told Temple police he took the girl to another apartment where he was painting. At some point, he said, he noticed the girl wasn't breathing and attempted CPR.

The child's mother discovered Johnson trying to resuscitate the infant and called 9-1-1. The girl was taken to McLane's Children's Hospital shortly after 10:30 AM, where she was pronounced dead three hours later.

Johnson's story was contradicted by the findings of paramedics, who said they observed contusions on her abdomen, active bleeding from her rectum, and blood in her diaper.

A sexual assault nurse examiner later confirmed anal and rectal injuries, and an autopsy revealed that the infant's injuries were the result of having been penetrated by an object.

Johnson was booked into the Bell County Jail and charged with aggravated sexual assault on August 7, 2015.

On Wednesday, March 30, 2016, Johnson was indicted indicted for capital murder. He remains in the Bell County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond.
