Texas Proven to be Home to the Best Grocery Retailer
According to Dunnhumby, the global leader in customer data science, H-E-B is the number one grocery store in the United States for the fourth time in eight years. The study includes a survey of 11,000 people and found that "saving customers money" was the most important factor for success in the United States. Cost savings has been increasing in importance over the last eight years.
H-E-B is followed by Market Basket, Costco, WinCo Foods, and Aldi to round out the top five grocery retailers. The success of these five companies primarily relies on their ability to keep cost down. Dunnhumby points out that Covid, agricultural shortages, and inflation are all factors that have greatly impacted how Americans navigate the grocery retail businesses.
San Antonio, Texas is home to the H-E-B headquarters, and there it overlooks over 435 stores throughout Texas and Mexico. Central Market, an upscale grocer, is also operated by H-E-B. The company was founded in 1905, as C.C. Butt Grocery Store. I will never understand why the company decided to switch from "Butt Grocery" to "H-E-B", but decisions were made that resulted in the current name.
As of January 2025 there were 339 H-E-B stores in Texas. In 1996, there was a store opened in Lake Charles, Louisiana, but it ultimately closed operations in 2003. Currently, there are over 150 communities that have H-E-B stores.
If you live in a Texas town that doesn't have an H-E-B then it is possible that you don't actually live in Texas. However, if you are absolutely sure that you are in Texas and you want to suggest they build a store in your town then just click this link and let them know.
