February 1st is the second annual National Unclaimed Property Day.
What Does 'Unclaimed Property' Include?
The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators states that nearly 33 million people in the United States have unclaimed property.
Common forms of unclaimed property can include dormant bank accounts, stocks, and uncashed dividends.
Unclaimed property can also include:
- forgotten utility deposits or other refunds
- insurance proceeds
- payroll checks
- cashier’s checks
- mineral royalties
- abandoned safe-deposit box contents
Unclaimed property does not include real estate or vehicles.
The Deadline to Make a Claim
Good news! There is generally no statute of limitations for unclaimed property the state holds.
That means there’s no time limit for owners to file a claim, so even if it's been several months or even years, the claim can be filed whenever you want.
Funds and property remain with the state until the rightful owner comes forward.
More good news...it's free to file a claim.
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar says nearly $2 billion dollars has been returned to Texans since he took office.
