UPDATE: Temple Police Department spokesman Cody Weems issued the following news release shortly before 4:30 PM Monday:

The Temple Police Department is investigating the deaths of two children in the 1500 block of South 35th Street.

Officers were dispatched to a residence for a welfare check at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 30. Upon arrival, officers made entry into the residence and observed two deceased young children.

Officers also located an adult female who was cognitively unresponsive. She was transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Temple.

Two additional children were located in the residence and have since been placed in the care of Child Protective Services.

Identities, ages and genders of the deceased have not been confirmed. The circumstances of their deaths are still under investigation. Autopsies have been ordered.

Police in Temple say two children were found deceased inside a home Monday, along with two other children who were taken into CPS care and a woman described as unresponsive.

Our partners at News 10 report that police were called to the house at West Avenue P and South 35th Street shortly before 11:40 AM. Responding officers found two children - one younger than 2 and the other younger than 5 - deceased. Police told News 10 it appeared as if the children had been dead for some time - possibly days.

Police have not commented on a possible cause of death.

Two other children were removed from the home and placed in the care of Child Protective Services.

Police also found a woman in the home whose identity had not yet been released Monday afternoon. She was described as conscious, but unresponsive and was transported to Baylor Scott and White Hospital.

According to KCEN-TV, neighbors said a woman and three children lived inside the home and that the woman had recently returned from a drug treatment program.
