A statue many of us have probably passed countless times here in Belton, Texas has garnered a lot of attention in the past few years. The statue, resting in front of the old Bell County Courthouse, has recently been the subject of a fundraiser aimed at having it moved, with some questioning why it still stands outside the courthouse.

The Statue And Previous Attempts To Relocate It

In 2020, Bell County Commissioners considered a general referendum regarding the statue's potential move. However, they ultimately decided not to take action, citing state law they said prohibits a vote on the issue.

There have been many opinions on both sides regarding the removal of statue. Now the conversation is ramping up again.

One Commissioner for Bell County, Louie Minor, has decided to start a fundraiser to move the statue. According to FOX 44, a gathering in favor of the statue's removal will be held on Monday February 20th at the courthouse.

Minor said the sculpture, has stood guard perpetuating racism here in the county" for over a century, and that since private funds were used to erect is, he believes private funds can be used to move it.

Other Opinions On The Statue

Shirley Fleming, President of Bell County Coalition of Black Democrats, is in favor of moving the statue, telling FOX 44, “Every black person that passes this statue, my grandchildren, my great grandchildren, will be passing that statue from now on if we don’t remove that statue.”
