It's official: the Dixie Chicks have changed their name to The Chicks.

According to KCEN TV, on Thursday, the award winning country music group from Texas changed their name quietly on all of their social media platforms and they also put out new music and video under the name The Chicks.

If you go to the their original website it now sends you to the site with their new name thechicks.com.

A short message posted on the site said: "We want to meet this moment." It's signed by members Martie Maguire, Natalie Maines and Emily Strayer. The band confirmed the news to the New Times.

The name change happens at the same time the group is releasing a new album "Gaslighter".  It's been 14 years since they have put out a new album.

The name changed happens after the killing of George Floyd, who was killed on May 25 in Minneapolis after a white police officer pressed his knee on his neck.  This sparked protest around the world.

The country group Lady A recently changed their name from Lady Antebellum.   It's also caused some companies to rethink the branding on their products.
