Express ER has announced the immediate emergency forgiveness of over $3.5 million in patient debt.

In a statement issued Friday, Express ER General Manager Dr. Dan Akers said the debt relief program will go into effect immediately for all patients seen on or before March 31, 2020. There's no need for patients to apply or petition.

“With unemployment skyrocketing, I think it’s the compassionate thing to do for the communities we serve,” said Dr. Akers. “I don’t want to add more stress to people’s lives.”

Going forward, Express ER will also forgive all patient balances that are directly related to COVID-19.

“It is our hope that this gesture will alleviate pressure related to healthcare costs that our patients may be facing,” Dr. Akers said.

The decision came after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic.

Express ER operates 24/7 facilities in Austin, San Antonio, Abilene, Waco, Temple, and Harker Heights.
