Well, June's off to a weird start at Temple High School, but thankfully everyone is safe after a suspicious device was found near the campus late Tuesday morning.

Alejandra Arreguin with the City of Temple tell us the Temple Police Department was told about the device around 11:30 AM.

It was found in the 800 block of North 31st Street. Out of an abundance of caution, Temple High School was placed on lockout status while surrounding streets were closed down.

The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called to retrieve the device. Our partners at News 10 report it was safely retrieved around 1:40 PM, and that the lockout status was lifted shortly thereafter.

In an email we received from Arreguin at 2:24 PM, she confirmed that investigators were able to determine that the device was not an explosive. Still, kudos to Temple ISD for taking precautions and to Temple PD for locking down the scene until a bomb squad could come out. Better safe than sorry!

Temple police are asking anyone who may have helpful information to get in touch with the Criminal Investigation Division at 254-298-5500 or Bell County Crime Stoppers at 254-526-8477. You can also submit a tip at bellcountycrimestoppers.com or via the free P3Tips app.

You don't have to give Crime Stoppers your name, and a tip leading to an arrest could net you a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Speaking of Bell County Crime Stoppers, it's worth visiting their Most Wanted and Unsolved Cases/Missing Persons pages once a while. You never know: you could recognize someone or have information that could either help put away a violent offender or help a local family find peace.
