Temple police are investigating after a man reportedly tried to take a 5-year-old boy from the backseat of the child's grandmother's car Sunday night.

In a news release, Temple Police Department spokesman Cody Weems said officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of South 3rd Street around 10:10 PM in response to an attempted kidnapping.

When officers arrived, a woman told them she and her grandson were at the Family Dollar store at 1510 South 1st Street when a silver vehicle pulled up beside them and a man got out. The man reportedly approached the woman's vehicle, reached into the backseat, and tried to pull the child out of the car. Thankfully, he was unsuccessful and the woman was able to flee the scene in her car.

The attempted kidnapper was described as a black male wearing a hoodie. There were no further details available about him or the vehicle, except that the victim described seeing several people inside and that one of the occupants pointed a long gun out of the vehicle's window.

The case remained under investigation Monday afternoon.

If you have any information that may help detectives find the would-be kidnapper, his friends, or the silver vehicle in question, please contact Temple PD at (254) 298-5500.
