A German court has sentenced a 25-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man to life in prison for the murder of the woman’s lookalike because she wanted to fake her own death. The woman, identified as Shahraban K who is of Iraqi and German heritage, committed the murder because she wanted to escape family conflicts and go into hiding.

Shahraban K was able to find a doppelgänger through social media, and then she lured a 23-year-old woman to her death by offering her a free beauty treatment. Shahraban K and her accomplice, Sheqir K, picked up the victim in August of 2022, and brought her to a wooded area where they stabbed her 56 times. The put the victim’s body in Shahraban K’s car after they killed her. This was meant to lead Shahraban K's parents into mistakenly believing that the corpse was their daughter’s. However, forensic investigations were able to identity of the victim correctly.

The court ruled that the crime was particularly severe. The trial lasted for 11 months, and it consisted of over 50 days of hearings. Due to the severity of the court's findings, it is doubtful that the life sentences would be suspended after 15 years which does often happen in Germany. The judge that resided over the case referred to the murder as a "disturbing act".

Shahraban K had also attempted to hire a hitman to kill her brother-in-law. Some people believe that Shahraban may have been motivated to commit these crimes due to the fact that her marriage had broken down.
